14 Days Shangri-la Trekking Tour

Includes: Kunming, Zhongdian, Xiangcheng, Daocheng, Litang & Chengdu

In the late 1920s, American explorer Joseph Rock, ventured here and discovered a group of three peaks more stunning than any he had ever beheld. The peaks are known to Tibetans as the Konka Risumgonpo or the Konkaling peaks. The three peaks Chenrezig, Chanadorje, and Jampayang are named after and believed to contain the essences of three Tibetan bodhisattvas. Like Mt. Kailash they are circumambulated by Tibetans from near and far. Besides our own past expeditions, no guided treks have ever been into this area. The Chinese government has long restricted foreigners from getting anywhere near the peaks. Our goal is to travel through Kham to its border with Muli Tibetan Autonomous region and enter into the Konkaling mountain sanctuary. We will travel around the three peaks stopping at several monasteries enroute completing our trek on the wildflower strewn alpine pastures in the middle of the three mountains. We will also have the opportunity to witness the annual horse festival in Litang, which takes place in August each year. The most magnificent festival in the region, thousands of Tibetans gather for the festivities, setting up colorful tents on the grassland. We will also visit Litang monastery, one of Kharm's major monasteries. Over 10,000 Khampas take part in the festival. For the opening ceremony Tibetans from areas all around don spectacular, colorful traditional clothing and ornaments. The smell of weisang (Juniper) fills the air. A long parade of lamas takes place. And then the horse races begin. Other activities include yak racing, stunt riding, and archery, as well as folk dancing and singing.

D1

Arrive in Kunming, the capital of Yunnan province. Meet at airport and transfer to your hotel. Kunming, called the City of Eternal Spring, is more than 2200 years old.

D2

Take a morning flight to Zhongdian, gate way to Tibet. You will spend most of your time on an altitude over 10000 feet. We will visit the Songzanlin Monastery which is the biggest Yellow Hat Sect Tibetan Buddhism Monastery. We will use this to acclimatize the high altitude and thin air.

D3

D4

Drive to Daocheng where the road ends, visit the Gongkaling Monastery, after dinner, enjoy a hot spring bath in a nearby village. stay at Riwa Green Yading Hostel.

D5

Trek on the pilgrim trails to the holy place of Cherizi, hike up to pasture and through primary forest. Finally we will reach our base camp. Stay overnight with monks.

Today we are going to do some hard hiking around the Chenrizi (the Bohhdisava of Compassion). We will expect to see alpine lakes, passing pastures and valleys. finally find our way back to Gongka Chonggu Monastery and finish our pilgrim to this holy mountain.

D8

Enjoy your walk back to Riwa, where you will meet your driver and transfer to Daocheng. Tonight we will have soothing hot spring bath again in a village.

D9

We'll have an early start today so we can have more time to explore this picturesque remote Tibetan town. At an altitude of just over 4000m, this is one of the highest towns in the world (Lhasa is 3700m). Situated high on a grassy plateau, Litang has the feel of a rough and tumble 'Wild West' town. Khampas - dressed in yak skin coats, bedecked in colorful necklaces and hair ornaments, long daggers hanging from their belts - from the surrounding areas amble into town to stock up on food and supplies, play pool on the streets and hang out in the local teahouses. This small town is great for people watching and just strolling around.

One of Tibet's most isolated and least-visited regions, Lithang is an area of pristine natural beauty characterized by high mountain passes and deep valleys, endless grasslands dotted by the occasional yak herder. The highlight of this trip is the annual horse festival in Litang, which takes place Aug 1 to Aug 7 in 2001.

D13

This morning we'll visit the famous Chang-Qing-Chun-Ke'er-Si monastery and pay homage to the living Buddha with a personal interview. The monastery here is now home to 1400 Yellow Hat sect monks. Once a hotbed of Tibetan dissent, this monastery was destroyed in the 1950s but has since been completely rebuilt. After our visit we will leave for Kangding.
