16 Days Marvels of Silk Road

Includes: Beijing, Urumqi, Turpan, Dunhuang, Lanzhou, Xining, Xi'an & Shanghai

    2000 years ago, Emperor Wudi of the Han Dynasty dispatched an emissary to the west, not for trade, but for securing allies against the hordes intrusion from the north. That was the first time China opened its door to the western world. Since then, camel caravans, carrying spices, fruits and all kinds of goods from the west, continuously crossed the vast deserts and the freezing mountains to come to China for the seek of silk. Today, you can follow the path of those ancient caravans all the way on the silk road. But, with YEAT, you will certainly experience the adventure in a much comfortable way.

Arrive at Beijing International Airport, met by the local guide for hotel transfer.

Fly westward across the country from Beijing to Urumqi. Of all the cities in the world, Urumqi is the farthest from the sea! You are about to step on that mystical road where East meets West. Tonight you are treated with the famous regional cuisine. Stay overnight in Urumqi.

Enjoy the approximately 70 miles drive to the placid Heavenly Lake (Tianchi), properly named for its steep green pastures, virgin conifer forests, and snowy mountains. The elevation is 6000 feet. This evening in Urumqi is a good time to get a feel for this crowded and lively city where people of 13 indigenous nationalities live.

Visit the Xinjiang Museum. Then drive to Turpan, an oasis amid the desert, and renown for its grapes and honeydew melons. Visit the famous Karez Wells, an underground irrigation system that carries melted snow from Mt. Tianshan to the fields below. Tonight taste roasted lamb and enjoy the Xingjiang folklore performance.

Today. you will see the ruins of the once prosperous ancient cities of Gaochang and Jiaohe. Of special interest is the Flaming Mountain locale of described in the noted Chinese classic, Journey to the West. Board an overnight sleeper train to Dunhuang.

In the morning, awake in Gansu Province. Dunhuang, one of the most historic destinations along China's Silk Road, is also a huge center of Buddhist art. In 1900 a grand and priceless discovery was made of hundreds of carvings, documents, embroideries, and paintings left by the ancient monks came up into the world. Other attractions include the ruins of Yanguan, the Humming Sandy Mountain, and Crescent Moon Springs. Take a camel ride in the desert. Stay in Dunhuang for two nights.

Today you will visit the world famous Mogao Grottoes, designated as a world cultural heritage by UNESCO for its l600-year accumulated cultural, architecture, and art treasures. They are China's oldest monumental Buddhist grottoes. The first grotto was constructed in 366 AD. Housed in the remaining 492 cave temples are over 2,400 sculptures and 45,000 square meters of frescoes.

Drive from Dunhuang to Jiayuguan Pass, the western end of the Great Wall. Visit this vital stronghold of military defense. Lunch in a nearby city followed by a visit to a local vineyard. Stay overnight in Jiayuguan.

Fly to the capital city of Gansu Province, Lanzhou, the "City of Fruit." Note how gracefully the Yellow River runs through this city. Attractions include Bridge No. 1 and Mt. Jade Stream. Tonight taste the local specialties.

Board your train to Xining, the capital of Qinghai Province. It has been central China's gateway to Tibet since the ancient times. It is also the area from which the Yangtze and the Yellow Rivers originate. See those majestic temples and golden altars. Marvel at the jeweled pagodas of a mosque and the Temple of Tar. Stay two nights in Xining.

Today is for you to enjoy the breath-taking beauty of the Qinghai Lake. 12,000 feet above the sea level. It is China's largest salt lake. You will never forget turquoise blue water, the jade-green pastures and the cleanest azure sky. The reed tents, black oxen, the yellow blooms and the colorful Tibetan costumes - What a splendid land.

Continue your city tour of Xining. Experience the unique flavor of this border city where many different ethnic, cultural, and religious groups live in peace and harmony. You could see followers of Islam, Lamaism, and Christianity in this one city, and each brings their distinctive contributions to make your visit a truly memorable. Take a train back to Lanzhou for an overnight stay.

Fly to Xi'an, the ancient capital of 11 dynasties. Visit the ancient city walls. Tonight enjoy a special banquet of dumplings and see a wonderful stage show of the Tang Dynasty. Stay in Xi'an for two nights.

Drive to Mt. Huashan, one of the five holy mountains in China. Ascend by cable car to the top of this majestic mountain for a breath-taking view of its five peaks and the Yellow River. Stay overnight in Xi'an.

Today you will visit the world famous Terra- Cotta Warriors. Concealed under earth, those thousands of life-sized clay warriors, horses, chariots, as one part of the tomb of Emperor Qinshihuang, were accidentally discovered in 1974 by a farmer while he was digging out a well. 
Excavation still continues today on the rest part of the huge tomb complex of Qinshihuang, the first emperor in Chinese history and the initiator of the Great Wall. Later in the day fly on to Shanghai, Afterwards ascend the Tower of the Eastern Pearl ( Asia's highest ) in the newly developed Pudong District. Enjoy a night view of the city and taste the deluxe Shanghai courses. Stay in Shanghai.

Enjoy a delicious breakfast. This is followed by a city tour to complete your stay in Shanghai and your tour of the ancient Silk Road in China. Board your homeward flight in the afternoon.
