About TopTrip

TopTrip covers China province by province - Yunnan and the north first - for independent travellers rather than tour groups. The unit is the province, because that is the unit Chinese transport, weather and permits actually work in.

One province is finished before the next is started. Each gets the same spine: when to go, how to move around, where to stay, and what is genuinely worth the time, with the internal distances stated in hours rather than kilometres.

Facts come from primary sources. Train and bus routings are checked against the operating railway and bus companies, and entry and permit rules against the governing authority, both of which change more often than travel writing does. Anything numeric carries the date it was checked, because a price without a date is not information. Geographic data comes from GeoNames and OpenStreetMap, photographs from Wikimedia Commons under their individual Creative Commons licences, and time zone data from the IANA database.

We do not accept payment for a placement, a ranking or a favourable review. Where a link earns a commission, the page carrying it says so. We do not claim to have tested something we have not: plan details and prices that come from a provider rather than from our own checking are labelled as such. And we do not publish a page to fill a gap in a keyword list.
